Fun with Fungie

Well although he has been hanging around the mouth of Dingle harbour since 1983 my first opportunity to say hello to Fungie the Dingle Dolphin occurred last Saturday while driving a touring group along the Wild Atlantic Way. Getting on a bit in years, in his thirty’s now which is well middle aged for a Bottlenose Dolphin, he teased not leaping and cavorting but instead showing his presence by swimming alongside sounding and diving as dolphins do.

The group comprising lads and lassies from Australia, USA, Canada and New Zealand loved the diversion, an opportunity to experience Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way up close and personal. Having driven round the majesty of Slea Head passing through Dunquin and Ballyferriter, leaving the coach to breath in the ozone accompanied by a celebrity dolphin just made their day.

The following morning it was off to the Cliffs of Moher, the Burren and Black Head drive all jewels in their own right, what wonderful countryside Ireland has…….
