Maddies, whites, lug, wraps, and razor clam if the sea is rough are the baits to use and fish to expect are flounder, dab, whiting, rockling, and codling, with maybe an odd bass. The beaches generally fished are Clone, Mauricecastle, Courtown north, and Donaghmore, however the venues eventually chosen are based on prevailing weather conditions which adds to the challenge of the event.

The likes of well known UK based match anglers Alan Yates and Chris Clarke have dominated the event in recent years, although the gap is closing with top Irish match anglers such as Joe Byrne and Dave Roe giving the UK internationals a run for their money, Dave with three section wins getting one over on Chris by taking first prize in 2011.
